What is Ruqyah?

Introduction into Ruqya?

Understanding Ruqya and Its Purpose

Ruqya is a powerful spiritual remedy rooted in the Qur’ān and Sunnah, used for healing from ailments caused by Jinn, sihr (magic), or the evil eye. It is not merely a cure but a means of strengthening one’s connection with Allāh, reinforcing tawheed (monotheism), and removing obstacles that hinder worship. True healing comes with sincerity, conviction, and trust in Allāh’s words, as the Qur’ān is a source of both guidance and cure.

While physical remedies exist, ruqya reminds us that ultimate healing lies in divine intervention. It is essential to approach it with the right mindset, understanding that nothing happens without Allāh’s will and that ruqya should be performed in accordance with Islamic teachings for it to be truly effective

To truly grasp Ruqya and benefit from it, one must first understand Qadar (divine preordainment), as nothing occurs without Allāh’s permission. Ruqya serves as a means of healing individuals or places affected by Jinn or sihr (magic) through the recitation of Qur’ānic verses in the prescribed manner. However, its primary purpose is to relieve suffering and remove obstacles that prevent people from fulfilling their true purpose—worshipping Allāh alone without associating partners with Him.

This fundamental concept is reinforced by the verse:

“And I (Allāh) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).”

This ayah also serves as proof of the existence of Jinn for those who may doubt it.

Seeking healing through the Noble Qur’ān and authentic Prophetic traditions is undoubtedly beneficial and leads to complete recovery. Allāh affirms:

“Say: it is for those who believe, a guide and a healing.”

The Prophet ﷺ also emphasized that for every disease, Allāh has provided a cure, except for death. As mentioned in authentic narrations:

Allāh has never created a disease but created its treatment, that is known by some people and unknown to others, except death.” “There is no disease that Allāh has created, except that He also has created its remedy.”

The Qur’ān is a comprehensive cure for all ailments, whether they affect the heart, the body, or extend to both this life and the Hereafter. However, not everyone experiences healing through the Qur’ān. Success in receiving its cure depends on sincerity, strong belief, complete acceptance, and unwavering conviction. When all conditions are met, the illness will not persist indefinitely. After all, how can any disease withstand the words of the Lord of the Heavens and the earth? The sheer power of these words is beyond measure, as indicated in the verse:

“If these words were revealed upon the mountains or the earth, these mountains would split and the earth would be rent asunder.”
